Robin that kisses for its supper: Woman trains robin to feed from her mouth

When this bird lover persuaded a hungry robin to take food from her hand, she thought it could hardly get any tamer.

Until she placed a sultana between her lips – and the bold bird swooped to snap it up.

Now the mouth-to-mouth transfer has become a daily routine for legal secretary Teresa Karasavvas.

Rob – as she has named the bird – is so trusting that it also flies into her house and eats from a special bowl.

Mrs Karasavvas, 49, from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, fell in love with robins when she was a little girl and used to watch her grandfather feed them.

She now waits outside her back garden every morning and taps the robin’s feeding bowl.

When he hears the familiar noise he swoops down and prises a sultana from his feeder’s mouth.

Rob has become so used to the routine he now patiently sits each morning waiting outside the backdoor for his food to arrive.

The bird has even been known to fly into the house and enjoy dinner alongside Mrs Karasavvas and her husband Chris, 59, a business development manager.

The unusual friendship has been going strong for 19 months now, and is particularly rewarding in the run up to Christmas.

Mrs Karasavvas said: ‘I’ve been feeding him for about 19 months now. When I first saw him the ground was covered with frost and snow and he must have been hungry.

‘He got so close to me I could almost touch him. I stood freezing in the garden every morning for about three weeks to get him to eat out of my hand.

‘He’s been taking food from me ever since and more or less lets my touch him now. He comes to see me every day, it’s like having a robin for a pet.

‘It’s always been a childhood dream for me. I’ve always wanted a tame robin.

‘I’m 50 next year and I think I’ve loved robins for 45 years of my life. I have lots and lots of robin cards and robin ornaments.

‘One day my husband suggested seeing if he would eat out of my mouth.

‘So I placed the sultana in my mouth and just a second later he swooped down and grabbed it. I do it every morning now.

‘He’s got a special little character. He’s often waiting out on the railings in the back garden for us in the morning before we get up.

‘It feels fantastic for him to eat out of my mouth. I can’t describe how happy I was he first did it.

‘The first time he took the food from my lips I cried. I know robins don’t live very long and I will be devastated when he goes.’

The robin is one of Britain’s most easily recognisable garden birds and its image adorns Christmas cards across the country.
